A fine balance

I stole this blog title from a book by Rohinton Mistry. It's a good phrase to explain things with Lilah.

She finally finished the course of meds to get rid of the infection but her feedings have not improved. We have to be very careful not to push her with bottle feedings. On the flip side, she doesn't really give us clear cues she is done so we have to keep trying to give her the bottle even when she pushes it out of her mouth. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. What's even more strange is there are times when she will suck on her fingers like crazy after she has decided she is done with the bottle, which is one of her hunger cues.

It's difficult knowing she was taking 40-50mL feeds and is now back to 15-20. I can't wait to be past this trouble!

G-tube adventures

We are definately getting use to feeding Lilah with the g-tube. However we've had a few obstacles. She has a small infection that is causing some issues. They put her on antibiotics and it is finally starting to clear.

Unfortunately the drug they have her on is upsetting her tummy and making her spit up a lot more then normal. We just have to get through six more days and hopefully her feeds will go back to normal.

This evening as I held her after her feeding, I stood up and looked down at the floor when I felt something hit my feet. Her tube actually popped out! They told us this would happen but it still caught me by surprise! We took a family trip to the emergency room and they got it back in and checked her over to make sure everything was okay. She is totally fine. Her mama on the otherhand was a bit of a mess about it. Thank goodness Dave was home and collected us calmly and without hesitation.

We had a great day today celebrating the homecoming of the kids.

Lilah had an awesome day for feeds by mouth. She took over 44% of her feeds by mouth in a 12 hour stretch. She usually averages around 25-30%.

A few firsts

Dave experienced his first blow out diaper thanks to Alec a few days ago. I don't know what surprised him more, the mess or the fact I would not change the baby for him! However, in the end, I helped him a little.

Lilah had her first speech therapy appointment yesterday. The same department that runs occupational therapy in the NICU takes out patients in their clinic just a few floors below. We were given a few things to try to help Lilah get more then an ounce of Milk by mouth at feedings. So far the most I have gotten her to take has been 35mL of an 80mL feeding.

And finally, we took our first walk around the neighborhood! The weather has finally warmed up enough. It's been a long winter in more ways then one.

Learning Lilah

Lilah knows exactly what she wants and she is not afraid to tell ya! We have been having quite the adventure trying to figure out her preferences.

She is now taking 25-30ml (about an ounce) of her 70ml feedings and is up in weight to 8lbs 14oz. She likes the swing and lots of music or white noise. If you hold her, you better be walking... None of this sitting business!

Alec is up to 10lbs 4oz. He is always hungry or wet but generally happy.

I'm pretty sure he is thinking "where's my bottle? Is it time to eat?"
